We all know that if you want to save some money on energy costs you should turn off the lights when you leave a room, close the front door to keep the heating/air conditioning in, use energy efficient CFL bulbs wherever possible, etc. Here’s one other simple step you can take that could save you up to 10% on your ever-rising electric bill… unplug everything! Ok, maybe if we could actually unplug everything in our homes we would save more like 90% but here’s the thing… appliances draw a small amount of energy as long as they are plugged in even when they are turned off. It’s called phantom energy. Here’s what we do at our house: obviously we unplug some things when we aren’t using them (phone chargers, humidifiers, de-humidifiers, coffee pot, toaster, coffee grinder, baby monitors, and so on). Things like the television and DVD player we plug into a power strip and turn off the strip when we aren’t using them. It’s simple and it’s good for the planet as well as your budget. If 10% doesn’t sound like much, just think about getting one month of free electricity each year!
